SmartnotesInterlibrary loan services

Interlibrary loan is a service that enables our library to make available to you items not in the Franklin Pierce Law Library collection. This is done through a cooperative arrangement with many other libraries.

After determining that the book or journal article you desire is not a part of the Franklin Pierce Law Library collection, nor available on a full text computer database, you may make an Interlibrary Loan request.

Forms are available on the door of the Interlibrary Loan office and online on the library web page. One form per item should be filled out as completely as possible. The more information you provide, the quicker and easier it will be to fill your request. Forms should be left in the Interlibrary Loan office, sent electronically, or email bshanks@piercelaw.edu, with information on the article or item you wish to borrow.

The loan period will be determined by the lending library and will usually be at least two weeks for books. Periodicals are rarely available for loan, but articles are usually photocopied in accordance with the copyright laws and will not need to be returned.

Some lending libraries will not renew Interlibrary Loan books, but many will. Any request for renewing a book must be made through the Interlibrary Loan office on or before the due date and should be requested only when absolutely necessary.

The time taken for an Interlibrary Loan item to arrive depends upon the difficulty of the request and how close the lending library is to Franklin Pierce Law Center . Most items arrive within five to ten days. If it becomes necessary to have a library outside of New England fill the request, it may take two weeks or more.

A notice will be placed in the mail folders of students and faculty, or via email, when items arrive. Journal articles will be placed in the mail folders or delivered electronically through email. Unless prearranged, attorneys will be notified by email to determine the method of pick-up or delivery.

Your requested materials may be picked up from the wall cabinet just outside the Interlibrary Loan office. Materials should be returned to the circulation desk.

The Interlibrary Loan privileges are extended to all attorney members, students, faculty, and staff.

For books, there is no cost unless the lending library charges a fee.

For articles, attorney members are charged a fee consistent with library document delivery costs. The Law Library pays charges up to $20.00 per article for students, faculty and staff.
