Faculty Services

wordle image of terminology describing library services for faculty

Circulation & Reserve Services

  • Faculty Borrowing Privileges

Faculty may borrow books for an indefinite period. The library reserves the right to recall materials.

If you need materials from another library, contact Barry Shanks. Acquiring a book or article from another library can take anywhere from several days to a month depending on the policies and procedures of the lending library.

Once borrowed, any photocopy becomes the property of the faculty member. Any book borrowed from another library is subject to the lending policies of that library. Some books can be renewed provided the request is made by the library in advance of the due date and the lending library agrees. Otherwise, books borrowed through inter-library loan should be returned to Barry Shanks by the due date specified.

  • Reserve Materials

Books and photocopies may be placed on reserve in the library by contacting Kathy Fletcher. Faculty should indicate if the materials are personal and if a barcode may be attached. If the materials are photocopies, please supply the total number of photocopies you want placed on reserve. Loose materials should be submitted in a binder or other permanently bound format.

Materials submitted for reserve may not be immediately available to students and faculty should plan accordingly. All faculty reserve materials will be returned at the end of each semester.

Classroom Support Services

  • Course Research Pathfinders

Librarians will create electronic research pathfinders for courses that satisfy the advanced writing requirement as well as for courses involving specialized research sources such as immigration law, international law, administrative law, trademark law, etc. Each research pathfinder is designed to serve as a starting point for research for students enrolled in the course with links to primary and secondary sources. A list of current research pathfinders is available.

  • Course Research Presentations

Librarians will speak to classes about research strategies in various topical areas at the request of faculty. Faculty interested in arranging a research presentation to provide “just in time” research instruction to students enrolled in their courses should talk with their library liaison in advance about scheduling the presentation and tailoring it to the professor’s needs.

  • Recent Exams

The library provides an online collection of recent course exams that professors have approved for release.

  • Teaching Resources - The following web sites may provide useful resources for faculty teaching:
    • Center for Computer Assisted Legal Instruction (CALI) - As a CALI member, Pierce Law faculty and students have access to a collection of on-line tutorials and lessons covering diverse topics taught in U.S. law schools. CALI lessons are designed to augment traditional law school instruction and may be assigned as supplemental study materials or integrated with other course materials. CALI lessons may be used on-line or downloaded directly from the CALI website. Contact Tom Hemstock, x1199, for the Pierce Law faculty password to access CALI.
    • Institute for Law School Teaching - The Institute for Law School Teaching serves as a clearinghouse for ideas that will improve the quality of education in law schools and develops materials on teaching and learning in law schools.
  • Textbooks

Required course texts and supplementary materials for current courses are kept on Reserve behind the Circulation Desk. The library purchases all required course texts. The following sources may be useful for faculty to identify course textbooks:

AALL-CRIV Legal Publishers

A directory of the major legal publishers with vendor contact information

FindLaw Legal Publisher List

An alphabetical listing of major legal publishers with links to their web pages.

Faculty Liaison Program

Faculty members are paired with a librarian who serves as the primary contact for faculty library needs. Your liaison can assist you with:

  • Making suggestions for purchases for the collection
  • Providing customized research pathfinders or research presentations for your courses
  • Suggesting relevant resources to support your scholarship
  • Meeting periodically to assess your research needs, explore ways to assist in your classroom instruction and refresh your memory about existing library service
  • Arranging for individual training on electronic resources
  • Arranging to have library materials routed to you
