QuickClicks Resources

To help faculty initiate research, the library provides elctronic access to many databases. They are listed on QuickClicks where they are organized categorically (with annotations) or alphabetically (without annotations). Remote access to databases designated by * requires entering your first and last name in the name field and the barcode number from your Pierce Law ID card in the password field. Please contact your liaison if you need a copy of your barcode number for remote access purposes. The remote access screen is shown here:

Databases on QuickClicks useful for starting research are The Making of Modern Law with access to 22,000 English and American historical legal treatises as well as periodical indices and databases listed in Journals & Periodicals on QuickClicks.

Current Awareness Services

E-mail Alerts

E-mail notification for the tables of contents of specific journals or about articles in specific legal and non-legal subjects can be arranged. The library offers the following e-mail current awareness services to faculty and staff. To register for e-mail alerts, please contact your faculty liaison.

BNA Highlights delivers weekly or biweekly summaries of BNA publications with direct links to full-text articles online. Publications include: ABA/BNA Lawyers' Manual on Professional Conduct; Electronic Commerce & Law Report; International Trade Reporter; Patent Trademark & Copyright Journal; United States Patent Quarterly; U.S. Law Week.

ABA/BNA Lawyers' Manual on Professional Conduct – click into service from QuickClicks page and on main page click on Get Free E-Mail Highlights in the Getting Started Box.

Electronic Commerce & Law Report - publishes via e-mail alerts, news of significant developments occurring between weekly issues. If you are a subscriber and would like to receive the alerts, a request to be added to our electronic mailing list should be directed to eplr@bna.com. Please include your name, title, e-mail address, mail address, telephone number, and account number (if known) in the body of the message.

International Trade Reporter does not offer email updates.

While BNA Highlights are not available for the Patent Trademark & Copyright Journal and United States Patent Quarterly, the BNA Professional Information Center [http://www.bna.com/pics.htm] allows you to select the IP area of law and click on Free E-Mail News.

U.S. Law Week does not offer email updates.

CCH Internet Research Network provides an alert service for its electronic libraries of tax and IP resources and commentary. Pierce subscribes to the CCH Tax Research Network, CCH IP Library (CCH Copyright Law Report and CCH Trademark Law Guide)  - electronic versions of print looseleaf primary source, commentary & news. CCH Tax Research Network provides an alert service for its electronic library of tax resources and commentary.

To help you follow topics of interest in the news,  both the Tax and IP Networks offer Tracker News that automatically searches daily document updates every day and locates information related to your topics so you can easily track them.

When logged into either Network you simply

  • Add a search on the Add Tracker Searches tab within Preferences, and Tracker News will run your search every day gathering all the news on your topic.
  • You can access your  Tracker News results from your daily email (if you choose to receive one), and on the My CCH tab.
  • To add a Tracker News search click the Preferences link on the navigation bar. 
  • Click the Add Tracker Searches tab.
  • Scroll down to view subject areas you wish to track.
  • Underneath the Narrow by topics heading, click checkboxes for the specific topics you wish to track.
  • You can also click the Select All checkbox to track all topics within the subject area.
  • Click Narrow with Search options if you wish to set specific search options for your Tracker News search.
  • Then select any or all the optional criteria listed.
  • Several other CCH Tax email newsletter can be subscribed to from the home page from the Sign Up box.

Legal Scholarship Network (LSN) and the Economics Research Network (ERN), both divisions of Social Science Research Network (SSRN), offer e-mail abstracts of working papers and articles accepted for publication in law and economics as well as announcements of professional meetings, calls for papers, and professional job listings.

The LSN database and paper downloads are free open source. Pierce Law Library subscribes to the alert service that sends you email notices of new papers on your area of law of interest. The easiest way to subscribe is to ask your liaison to email Sandy Barnes at SSRN to sign you up.  Faculty members can do this themselves.

  • Go http://www.ssrn.com/
  • Create a username and password.
  • Click on subscriptions link on the left navigation panel.
  • Click on Click Here To Join A Site License That Has Been Acquired By Your Organization.
  • Type Franklin Pierce.
  • Click join again.
  • Select either Entrepreneurship Research & Policy Network and/or Legal Scholarship Network and
  • Click Submit.
  • This will lead to another page requesting your email. Enter your Pierce email account and you are subscribed.

Once subscribed, you can edit your email subscriptions. You can click to subscribe/unsubscribe to individual journals and research papers in these networks as well as click to select subject matter journals in your area of law.

NELLCO's Legal Scholarship Repository (LSR) offers an e-mail alert service of newly posted works of scholarship as well as postings in areas of interest.

  • Go to http://lsr.nellco.org/.
  • Click on Customized Email Alerts by Subject Area.
  • Pick your topics and receive personalized email notifications.
  • Bealert notifies you via email of new content in the subject areas you select below.
  • To get started, check-off your subject areas and click on the button "notify me of new content".
  • Note that you will need to login after clicking for the notification request to be effective. (site registration is free).
  • If you are a New User you will be directed to a page to create a free account.

SmartCILP provides personalized e-mail delivery of articles indexed by the Current Index to Legal Periodicals. Subscribers receive a weekly citation list based on a profile of subject areas and/or specific journal titles. SmartCILP also provides links to full text in LexisNexis and Westlaw where available.

SmartCILP is a fee-based current awareness service.  To obtain an authorization code, please contact your liaison. To create a SmartCILP profile, first fill in the form at http://depts.washington.edu/scilp/scilp3.cgi. After you fill in your subscriber data, please review the topic, subject, and journal headings. To select a heading, simply click on the box and an "x" will appear. You can change your profile at any time by simply filling out the form again. The new profile will overwrite the old profile.

WestClip and LexisNexis Alert

Faculty liaisons can help set up customized WestClip (Westlaw) and Alert (LexisNexis) automated clipping service searches with the results delivered directly to the faculty member. For more information, please contact your faculty liaison.

Routing Materials

The library will route unbound law reviews and other journals, magazines and topical publications on request to any full-time faculty member. For assistance contact Jim Broutzos.
